You Are Not Alone

Each year, an estimated 1 in 5 or 581,830 Long Island residents suffer from some form of mental health disorder and approximately 400,000 people 12+ are impacted by a substance use issue in any given year.  Many suffer in silence—because they can’t ask for help, especially those who need it the most. That’s why it is so important for friends, families, and neighbors to be the voice of those who can’t or won’t initially seek help for themselves.

CN Guidance & Counseling Services, a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization serving Long Island for over 50 years, has grown substantially since its inception in 1972.  Our evolution has been shaped largely by reducing barriers to care and by the emerging needs of consumers as they move through the process of recovery.

Stories of Hope

Theresa’s Story

“I don’t want to get emotional, but when you think about saving your life and being able to be who you are around people like you, I’m not ashamed; I don’t mind crying, because they saved my life. They let me know that it’s okay to be me.”

Veronica’s Story

“Recovery is essentially a life-long process.  You have to live everyday putting your recovery first.”

“I would like to take the time to applaud you CNG for the program that you put in place where people can apply for Medicaid because it has been a chaos when reaching out to the state. The best is that we can just do the application over the phone, no need to take off days from work. Especially in the Haitian community, we are so happy, blessed and proud to have one of your employees Ms. Sophia Eveillard who helped me , my mother and other friends. She is extremely great!!! She is very nice, patient, and takes her time to explain the benefits. The best is that she will follow-up just to make sure that everything is ok. Honestly, it’s never easy to find a Haitian to help in these matters. Thank you so much for this gift “Sophia Eveillard” to the Haitian community. She is trustful.

Thank you, I just wanted to appreciate a great help!!”

“Before joining the JCC sponsored program for bereavement counseling, I was unsure what I could expect to gain or what I would get from the program. However, the exceptional support I have been receiving has not only assisted me with my recent loss, but helped me on a personal level in so many ways I never even imagined I would be forced to cope with. I have been given unique and strong tools as well as the encouragement so I have the ability to overcome many challenges I now face alone during this difficult time, specifically the feeling of loneliness, insecurity, and fear.

Surprisingly, one of the most profound realities I find myself dealing with, is my new role as a single parent, which is something I never anticipated before the loss of my wife.”

“Drop-In is a friendly and very supportive social club in which I am able to develop and cultivate friendships.”

“The program is an awesome judgment free place”

“I am so glad that the agency has thought of a way to allow us to continue to get together during these times.  I really enjoy calling in for my groups.  I don’t know what I would do If I couldn’t get the support.”

“I am so grateful to have this program. It has changed my life and now I’m not worried about having to go back to the hospital.”

“I can say with 100% certainty that under the guidance of my therapist through this program and the support of the JCC, I can see a future for myself that is as promising and hopeful instead of hopeless and bleak as many others would suffer from.”

“I would like to thank my therapist for taking me out of the dark place I was in and bringing me into the light that shines for me every day. Without her I don’t know what my life would’ve been. I would like to thank her and the JCC program for all of their help. This program is the best thing that happened in my life. I want to say thank you.”

“I really love this program.  I learned a lot about myself and how to communicate my feelings and resolve conflicts better.”

“This program really this help me realize my own red flags and how I can avoid the toxic situations I had been in previously”

“I loved the Love Notes workshop – It saved my marriage! We were about to get divorced before the program.  We now have better communication and understand each other better. “

“Thank you so much, I am so glad to have you guys with me cheering me on”

“Being here is a great experience.  I have been able to express myself without fear of being judged by anyone.  Sometimes, being here at PROS feels like a safe haven for me and other times, it feels like I am right at home”

“This is my first house and it is fantastic.”

“CNG came through for me when I couldn’t get it together for myself.”

“I am so grateful the school suggested CN Guidance and Counseling Services to our family. As a busy working parent who also care for her elderly parents, it’s hard to do the research to find therapist and doctors for my child’s special needs. My counselor Shirley is amazing. My son has a neurologist thanks to this agency. Now, he is also on a weekly regimen of Socialization, OT and Speech therapist outside of school all provided to me by CN Guidance and Counseling Services. Honestly, they have been a life saver. I wouldn’t not have even known where to start looking for these services for my child. We are forever grateful.”

“CN Guidance never ever gave up on my kid or my family. They never lost hope and made sure we didn’t too.”

“It’s a place where I can feel empowered and I don’t have to pretend that I’m anyone else”

“The Starry Night Café is a wonderful place where I feel safe and I am able to express myself freely”

“Youth ACT has given my child opportunities that they didn’t have before, I feel like I have my son back.”

“Youth ACT has been great and everyone has been very helpful. The amount of support our family has received has been amazing. My daughter is thriving because of this team.”

“The Veterans training facilitated by CNG was a great! Learning how to help support an individual in a mental health crisis is so valuable.”

“I attended the Youth Mental Health First Aid training and it was Excellent! Requesting all Hempstead staff be trained in this valuable training”
